The Mercedes GLE is a luxury midsize SUV that is the modern equivalent of Mercedes’ very first luxury vehicle, the 1998 M-Class. The vehicle has improved each year since then, becoming one of the most popular luxury SUVs on the market.

Trims and Powertrains

This year’s lineup of the GLE includes two new models for a total of five models, each with nine-speed automatic transmission and its own powertrain configuration. The base GLE 350 has a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine for casual driving, while the GLE 450 4MATIC® comes with a 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder mild-hybrid engine.

You can enjoy more power with the GLE580 4MATIC®, which has a four-liter twin-turbo V-8 mild-hybrid engine. The GLE 53 has a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine with an electric supercharger while the highest GLE 63 S trim comes with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 mild-hybrid engine.

Safety

The GLE has a perfect crash test rating with the IIHS and won the 2021 Top Safety Pick+ award. Automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring come standard on all models. There is also an optional Driver Assistance Package Plus upgrade that adds features like:

  • Pedestrian detection
  • Lane change assist
  • Front cross-traffic alert
  • Lane centering
  • Adaptive cruise control

Technology

All trims of the GLE come with an impressively large 12.3-inch gauge cluster display and touchscreen infotainment display. Integrated navigation and Apple Carplay/Android Auto connectivity are also standard on all models. You can also choose between two premium audio systems- a 13-speaker system or a 25-speaker system with ceiling-mounted speakers.

Pricing

The Mercedes GLE starts at a price of about $54,750 with the highest trim costing about $113,950. The base model itself includes many luxury features, and higher trims add even more high-end features like heated front armrests, an upgraded premium audio system, a 360-degree camera, more powerful engines, and more.

New Features

Mercedes continues to prove why it is one of the top contenders of its class with the new features offered for this year’s lineup. Wireless charging, ambient lighting, parking damage detection, and satellite radio are now standard on all models. The MBUX interior assistant and a head-up display are now available as standalone upgrade packages. This year’s lineup also sees the addition of the new Mercedes-AMG® GLE 53 and GLE 63 S models.
