Does Your Mercedes Need a Radiator Repair?

Your car’s engine generates heat as it runs, but for efficient operation, this heat must be dissipated. If the engine runs too hot for sustained periods it can cause damage to vital components. Your radiator acts to remove this heat and cool the engine. All mechanical parts, however, wear out over time. There are signs that a radiator is failing and you may need a radiator repair.

Passenger Heating Doesn’t Work Correctly

The heating system relies on the hot coolant traveling through the system. Air passes over the hot coolant pipes and heats up. This air is then pumped into your car to warm the cabin. If your radiator is failing and you switch on your heating on a cold day, this hot air may not blow into your car. A bad thermostat, a clogged radiator, or a leak in the system can all cause this problem.

A Broken Thermostat

The thermostat controls the release of coolant into the cooling system. When a predetermined heat is registered, the valve opens and releases coolant into the system to reduce the engine temperature. If a car’s engine is cold, for example when you first start your car in the morning, the temperature is low and the thermostat does not release coolant. If the thermostat is damaged, no coolant will flow into the engine and the temperature in the engine compartment will rise.

A Broken Water pump

Coolant is pumped through the system by the water pump to the radiator and then recirculated once it has cooled. A water pump that has malfunctioned will not circulate coolant and your engine temperature will rapidly rise.

A Coolant Leak

A pool of liquid underneath your car is usually not a good sign. If the liquid is yellow, pink, or green and smells sweet, then there is a coolant leak in your engine. When the level of coolant in the engine falls too low, it will not be able to circulate property and cool the engine, and the temperature will rise. A radiator is made of metal and plastic, and because plastic is not a durable as metal, these parts can become brittle, crack, and leak.

Damage to Exterior Radiator Fins

The thin tubes in the front of the radiator look like fins, and they carry the hot coolant from the engine. Air passes over the fins and cools the coolant before it is recirculated. These fins are delicate and can be damaged by flying debris. This damage can lead to coolant clogging in the fins, and the engine will start to overheat.
