How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Car?

Mercedes-Benz EV Charging

Charging your electric vehicle in Ballantyne or Waxhaw is easy with the various charging options available. Each option comes with different plugs and ports, and there are charging adapters that allow you to switch between methods. The charging time for your EV depends on which of these options you choose. Additionally, the type, make, and model of your EV will also impact charging time.

Since different EVs come with varying battery packs and charging times, there is no one answer to the question of long it takes to charge an electric car. However, understanding the three main types of EV charging – domestic charging, rapid domestic charging, and public charging – can help you determine your electric vehicle charging time. At Mercedes-Benz of South Charlotte, we can provide you with more information on each of these options so you feel confident in your new Mercedes-EQ model. Feel free to read on and contact us today if you have any questions!

Electric Car Charging Time: Level 1, Level 2, & Level 3 Chargers

  1. Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): Level 1 Charging, which uses a standard grounded (three-prong) 110V/120V charging outlet, may not be the quickest charging option but it’s perfect for replenishing some of the charge you used on your daily commute or as a backup. A full charge using this method can take up to 24 hours or more, so it’s important to note that it’s a slower charging process. In other words, you may need several days to fully charge your vehicle using this method. That’s why most EV owners opt to install a Level 2 charging system at home.
  2. Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: Professional installation is typically required for Level 2 Charging. These charging stations utilize rapid chargers with a voltage of usually 240V or higher and are often tailored to your specific brand of electric vehicle. Compared to using a standard grounded household outlet, Level 2 charging offers significantly faster charging times, taking only hours instead of days to fully charge your EV. DC fast chargers, which are different from AC chargers, are also widely available. While it’s possible to charge up to 80% in just 30-40 minutes with a DC fast charger, the final 20% will take longer due to a decrease in charging speed.
  3. Public Charging: In Fort Mill, SC, charging your electric vehicle on the go is convenient and accessible. Charging stations can be found at parking garages, malls, hotels, and even apartment buildings. With new charging stations being added daily across the country, you’ll never be far from a place to top off your EV. These charging stations come in varying types and speeds but often offer Level 2 charging for faster charging times. Some public chargers even utilize renewable energy sources such as solar panels or wind turbines, providing emissions-free charging options.

Typical Electric Car Charging Time: Domestic Charging Options

Domestic car charging times vary based on whether you choose Level 1 or Level 2 charging. Check out the electric car charging times here:

  • Level 1 EV charging can take days to fully charge an electric car.
  • Level 2 EV charging takes hours to fully charge an electric car. Generally speaking, a single night of Level 2 charging is sufficient to fully recharge an EV.

For everyday use, most EV owners opt for a mix of Level 2 charging at home and rapid charging for long-distance drives. If you drive a plug-in hybrid, your charging times will likely be much shorter than for a pure electric vehicle.

Plug-in hybrids typically take between 1-4 hours to fully charge since they use both electricity and gasoline as energy sources. They typically use electric power for short distances or at low speeds before switching to gas power.

Typical Public Charging Electric Car Charging Time

Level 3 EV charging is the fastest EV charging method and can fully recharge most EVs in an hour or less, or add significant range in just ten minutes. However, it’s only available at select public locations.

The charging speeds of home and public chargers vary significantly. Depending on your vehicle’s compatibility, you could potentially achieve a 0-100% charge within an hour at some public stations. However, it may take longer, ranging from 4 to 11 hours, based on the charging method and your vehicle’s battery capacity.
